Wegovy (Semaglutide) – Weekly Injection for Weight Management

What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a prescription medicine containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It belongs to the GLP‑1 receptor agonist class and is used together with diet and physical activity to help adults with obesity or overweight lose and maintain weight.

Who can it help?
Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI ≥ 30, or BMI ≥ 27 with weight‑related health conditions (e.g. hypertension, dyslipidaemia, type 2 diabetes)

How it works & dosage

• Wegovy is given as a once‑weekly subcutaneous injection, into the skin of your abdomen, thigh, buttocks or arm

• The dose is gradually increased over weeks, up to a target dose of 2.4 mg weekly.

• It works by slowing gastric emptying, reducing appetite, and improving fullness sensation, thereby helping reduce calorie intake.

• It must be used consistently and with lifestyle changes (diet, exercise) for best effect

Effectiveness & evaluation

• Clinical trials show significant weight loss when Wegovy is used with diet and exercise, with many users sustaining weight loss over time

• During use, your clinician will review progress periodically; if weight loss criteria are not met, the treatment may be re‑evaluated.

Safety & side effects

• Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, constipation.

• Because it slows digestion, some may experience bloating or changes in appetite.

• Rare risks: pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, potential kidney effects—monitoring is required.

• Do not use Wegovy if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma / MEN2.

• Always inform your clinician of other medications you take, as interactions may require adjustment or monitoring.

• Wegovy is a prescription‑only medicine (POM) and can only be supplied after a clinician assesses your medical suitability.

• It should not be seen as a standalone solution—diet, exercise, and behavioural support remain essential.

• Treatment should be monitored regularly to ensure safety and effectiveness.
